Teamwork on Digital Transformation Challenges I, 3 ECTS credits:
In this module, students will examine challenges posed by digital transformation in an interdisciplinary manner. This semester's challenge:
How can long-term changes in causes of death be visualised and communicated?
In the 20th century, the pattern of causes of death changed considerably, reflecting changing living conditions. Infectious diseases became less important over a long period of time, while non-communicable diseases became more important, although recent events are challenging this view. In the EU COST Action “The Great Leap. Multidisciplinary approaches to health inequalities, 1800-2022” (https://greatleap.eu) , scientists from many countries in Europe are investigating the roots of this development, with a particular focus on socio-demographic inequalities. In Working Group 3 of the COST Action, “Creation analytical tools: computational and visualisation tools”, we are developing new methods to visualize such data.
The challenge in this module is to take existing aggregated and individual data from the COST Action for the respective countries (Switzerland, Finland, Italy and Spain) and develop new methods and ways of visualization to compare current developments and inequalities, e.g. by sex or age between countries, and how the results can be communicated to a lay audience in the form of an interactive data story. If possible, the results will be fed back into the EU COST Action “The Great Leap”.
We are looking for students who are either highly interested in the topic or who have skills that will enable them to contribute to tasks ranging from coding visualisations to designing/implementing data stories.
You can find more information about the module in theUZH Course Catalogue.
